Halloween is a time when friends, family, neighbors, and communities celebrate with candy, decorations, costumes, and more. However, the risk of pedestrian fatalities increases significantly—by 43%—on Halloween compared to any other night, according to the Journal of the American Medical Association.
To help you stay safe this Halloween, here are a few tips:
- Ensure Your House is Well-Lit
Make sure both the interior and exterior of your home are well-lit. This helps provide a clear view for both you and any visitors. Also, keep pathways inside your home clear of decorations to prevent tripping hazards. - Decorate with Caution
Decorating can be fun, but accidents can happen. Be mindful of objects that could fall or become obstacles in the dark. Make sure your decorations allow you to move freely, and consider asking a family member or neighbor for assistance if needed. - Be Careful with Candles
Whether you’re using candles for ambiance or to ward off spooky spirits, ensure they are placed in a safe, secure location. The National Fire Protection Association reports that U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated average of 5,910 home fires started by candles from 2018 to 2022. - Stay Connected with Someone You Know
Halloween should be fun, but safety is the top priority. If you’re spending the evening alone, consider calling a friend, family member, or the Institute on Aging 24/7 hotline at 1-800-971-0016 for a chat. - Drive Safely and Cautiously
If you plan to drive while taking your family or friends trick-or-treating or to view decorations, please drive carefully. As noted, pedestrian fatalities are 43% higher on Halloween than on other nights. Many people wear dark clothing, making them less visible at night, so ensure your headlights are functional and consider wearing bright colors yourself.
While this is not an exhaustive list of safety tips, these suggestions can help you start your Halloween off safely.
